What's That Bright Light in the Sky?

Most likely, it's Jupiter. The photo to the left is how Jupiter would look tonight as viewed through a fairly powerful telescope. This image is from the wonderful (and free) Stellarium planetarium program.

This image shows what you'll see if you look outside at about 1 a.m, looking south from Portland. What's that bright object just below and to the right of Jupiter? Is it one of Jupiter's moons? Nope. That object is really two objects -- 8 Lib and 9 Lib. 9 Lib is a star that is also known as Zubenelgenubi (in Arabic: "Scorpion's southern claw"), located about 77 light-years from Earth. Zubenelgenubi has a close companion star, 8 Lib, and together they appear to be one object in our night sky. In this close-up image you can see 8 Lib and 9 Lib as two separate objects, as well as Jupiter and several of its moons.

Don't have a telescope? That's Ok, as Stellarium allows you to zoom-in on the planets for as close a view as you wish. In this image, we can see Jupiter and three of its moons (Ganymede, Io and Callisto). A really neat feature of Stellarium allows you to select an object and track that object as you zoom forward or backward in time. With Jupiter, for example, you can watch both the planet's rotation and the motion of its moons. Here's a close-up image of Jupiter as it will appear in one month, with its moons Europa (to the left) and Callisto (to the right).

Here's an image of the night sky (looking south) in one month (on May 24th). Notice how Jupiter has moved around to the right of Zubenelgenubi. And finally, a special treat: Here's an image for May 12th, in which you'll see Jupiter, Zubenelgenubi and a full Moon.

Shoelace Tying Made Easy

I've always had trouble tying my shoelaces. Either I've tied the laces too loose, and they come untied while I'm walking, or I've tied them too tight, and cut-off the circulation in my feet. Either way, it's a problem.

Now, along comes Ian's Shoelace Site, with many helpful hints (including diagrams) as to how you can both lace, and tie, your shoelaces. With a little practice, maybe I can master the "secure shoelace knot" and my loose laces problem will be no more. Hmmm. I wonder where I can find some blue and yellow shoelaces?

New Orleans Murder Rate Down for 2005! Duh?!

MSNBC-TV just reported that the murder rate in New Orleans, compared to 2004, dropped 70% in 2005. Huh? Note to MSNBC-TV: There's no one there!

Later in the same report, they did state that the population of New Orleans is down 71% from 2004. What are these folks smoking?

Oprah Not Hurt. What About the Pilots?

From today's news (Yahoo News story):

“Oprah Winfrey's private jet was forced to return to the city airport after its windshield was cracked in a collision with a bird, officials said. Winfrey and her boyfriend, Stedman Graham, were not hurt in the incident...”

But, what about the pilots? The story doesn't even mention them? Are we to assume that either Oprah or Stedman were flying the plane? Highly unlikely. After all, a bird hitting the cockpit window would certainly be more likely to cause injury to one, or both, of the pilots; yet, no mention of them in this story.

I realize that, as the "celebraties" involved in the incident, their welfare is more newsworthy than that of anyone else who may have been on the plane. But, isn't the welfare of the "others" on the plane equally important? Apparently not.

I Killed Typepad!

I cancelled my Typepad account Thursday morning and, by Thursday night, all of Typepad was down. It had to be me. I'm sorry, I didn't know I had that much power. I will try to use my power more wisely from now on.

Whatever Happened to Bread Machines?

Remember bread machines? About 15 years ago they were all the rage. What happened to them? Does anyone still sell them? Are they worth the bother?

Looks like Amazon is still selling them, with prices ranging from $39 to $250. So which is better: The 1-pound or 2-pound machines? The 1-loaf or 2-loaf machines? Are the Zojirushi machines really worth the $200 price tag? I guess I should just take some time and read Amazon's 'Guide to Buying Bread Machines.'

Bush Puts Middies to Sleep

President Bush today managed to put 75% of the Naval Academy midshipmen to sleep. Of course, this was just while waiting for him to show up. Or was it?

Wanted: Impartial Jurist

Immediate need for an impartial judge in Texas. Must not belong to, nor have ever contributed to, any political party (especially Democratic or Republican). Must have a squeaky-clean record (and we mean squeaky-clean), as your entire life will no doubt be reviewed by partisan hacks (and most likely dragged through the mud). Must have a high tolerance for political B.S. and be able to stomach incessant lying, deceit and malfeasance. Absolutely must not know, nor have ever had any association (including chance encounters, eating at the same restaurant, golf at the same country club, friends in common, etc.) with the defendent, Sen. Tom Delay. Applications accepted at Travis County courthouse.

Trick or Treat at an End

This year marks the end of an era for the Grumpy household: son #2 has finally reached that age (12) where it's no longer cool to go door-to-door in the neighborhood begging trick or treating for candy. It was his own decision (maybe helped along by Mom's promise that he could have all of the candy that we don't distribute to the beggars trick or treaters).

In a way, it's a sad time for Grumpy, as I've always escorted my kids on this annual quest for treats: From when they were little tykes, and the best we could do was five or six homes before they were too tired, to more recently when we trekked up and down the hills of the neighborhood in an hours-long and seemingly never-ending quest for "the good stuff."

No more walking through the 'hood with the other dads, discussing important world topics (or, more importantly, which home is sure to have replacement beers for those that we've already downed). No more having to carefully plan the route so as to pass by our home approximately mid-way through the evening (to drop-off the first full bag of goodies and make room for more). That's all over now. I may miss it.
